New to SVP Teens?

In a world like ours, running into someone like you is rare. You're here because you care about making a meaningful impact in your community, and we at SVP Teens are so excited to give you that opportunity! Before you jump right in, take a moment to read over this quick getting-started guide. It won’t take long, we promise.

Follow the steps below to make sure you're set up with all the resources you need to be successful on our team!

About Slack:

Slack is the messaging software that SVP Teens will be using to communicate throughout the year. Similar to Discord, it is organized into channels. Each channel has a defined purpose that allows us to keep all of our conversations organized and relevant.

It is available as a desktop app, in every browser, and as an app on every mobile device (can be found in the app store). We recommend configuring both the mobile app and the desktop app.

  1. Create channels to discuss the details of specific fundraisers, events, or topics only relevant to specific groups

  2. Upload and share media from other resources (such as Google Drive)

  3. Create and respond to polls (this feature will be used to decide on meeting dates and other team-wide decisions, and can also be used to make smaller decisions within committees). To make a poll, simply type  /poll "option 1" "option 2" "option 3" in the text bar.

Things you can do with Slack:

Rules for using Slack:

  1. No private channels. To ensure that everyone in the group can see the progress you are making, all channels must be public (this is the default setting when creating a new channel).

  2. Uphold the values listed in the SVP Teens Way

TO DO:

To finish setting up Slack:

  • Update your profile:

    • Add your role under 'What I do'   (if you are new, put 'Floater')

    • Add a profile photo

    • Add your cell phone number (if you have one) and email address

  • All members should join certain slack channels. Once in slack, click first on "channels", then search for and join the following channels:

    • #floaters-general

    • #1meetingminutes

    • #1general

    • #rollcall

How the 'Member Resources' section of the website works

The Member Resources section of the website is password protected so that it can be used internally by members of SVP Teens.

Members have access to a variety of specific policies and procedures that relate to each sub-team (e.g. if you wanted to learn how to get your videos uploaded to the official instagram, you could find information on how to do so by clicking on the 'Marketing' button).

This area also contains important forms that support us in making sure our team runs efficiently (e.g. if you spend your own money on something SVP related, you can get reimbursed by filling out the Expense Reimbursement form in the Fundraising section).

These policies and procedures also often include FAQs so that you can have common questions answered ASAP! If you have read through the website and don't find an answer to your question, the Execs in charge of each category are listed on our 'Member Directory' page.

The SVP Teens Way is a set of guiding principles that are a guideline for how to think and act as a member of our team.

Check out our Floater FAQ

It’s important to remember that you’re never alone at SVP Teens, and this principle applies to questions especially -- if you’re confused about something, the chances are pretty good that someone else has been, too. So, before you ask, take the initiative to check if your query has already been answered!

Reach out!

TO DO:

Finally, schedule a one-on-one meeting with the floater coordinators (@Audrey or @Megan) by messaging them on slack! During this meeting, you can discuss any questions you may still have about the SVP process.

If you’d rather stick to Slack, don’t be afraid to send your questions as a direct message to @Audrey or @Megan -- we’d love nothing more than to help you get settled in.

Message @Audrey or @Megan to:

a) book a (very casual) meeting

b) get answers to your questions about      SVP Teens

After completing these steps, you should be good to go! Get excited to start making a difference!

As a next step, visit our Member Directory Page to explore different roles and learn which members of the leadership team you can reach out to if you want to get involved in a specific area!
